I am seeking to start a private equity fund with the intent of “betting” against the commercial real estate and retail sectors in the United States. As the basis of our business plan will be rooted in economic theory to justify why betting against these sectors through short-selling etc will be feasible, I must fully understand why these sectors are doomed to collapse. Though I am a student of current events, trends, international relations, political science, and history, economics is my weakness. I have intuitive beliefs regarding economics that I have justified to myself through many readings; however, I need some answers fast.

Ludwig Von Mises is of the Austrian School of Economics. Milton Friedman is a libertarian and a believer in laissez-faire economics. What are the differences between the two men and their respective schools of thought?

I believe that economics, as with most mathematical problems, has one correct answer and many false answers. I do not view economics as matter of different opinions, but rather as a science in which there is one correct school of economics with all others being incorrect. I am a firm believer in the power of the free, deregulated market to sustain a high standard of living and elevate societies from poverty to wealth. I blame the actions of government for the current economic crisis (manipulation of interest rates, high taxes, federal reserve system, abolition of gold standard, inflationary spending etc.).

What I am getting at here is this: I intuitively know that the answers to our current economic crisis can be found in the literature and philosophies that support free market economics. However, within free-market economics and/or libertarian economics are many different variants. In seeking to predict future trends one must adhere to the correct school of economics. Are there are free market economists or thinkers out there that can explain to me some of the different schools of economic thought within ‘free-market economics’ and give me the differences between them? Can anybody provide me with a compelling argument for a single school of economic thought within laissez-faire economics that is the most accurate school thus conceived of?

A Russian website is selling a spyware kit, called WebAttacker, for approximately ten pounds sterling. The website, which refers to its creators as spyware and adware developers, markets the strengths of its kits, makes the kits available for online purchase and offers technical support to its buyers.

Included in the kits are scripts designed to simplify the task of infecting computers – the buyer need only spam out a message to email addresses, inviting recipients to visit a compromised website. Newsworthy topics are used to lure unwary users. One presents itself as a warning of the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus, providing links to the bogus website, which purports to contain advice on how to protect “you and your family”. The other claims that Slobodan Milosevic was murdered and invites users to visit the site for more information. These websites then attempt to download the malicious code remotely onto the user’s PC by taking advantage of known web browser and operating system vulnerabilities.

JavaScript code on the infected websites detects the visiting computer’s browser version and operating system, including any installed patches, and launches the most appropriate exploit. The exploit downloads a program that attempts to turn off the firewall and install malware, generally a password stealer, keylogger or a banking Trojan. Sophos protection against this threat has been available since 13 March, 2006.

“This type of behaviour is inviting the return of script-kiddies,” said Carole Theriault, senior security consultant at Sophos. “By simplifying the task of the potential hacker for a mere tenner, sites like this one will attract opportunists who aren’t necessarily very skilled and turn them into cyber-criminals.”

“The underground cyber economy is, in some ways, very similar to the one most of us operate by – everyone wants a piece of the action,” continued Theriault. “The more common cyber attacks become, the more we will see these types of sites offering kits, databases of email addresses, as well as bespoke Trojans and spyware. So as long as the money continues to flow, there will be interested parties.”

What caused the “economic crisis we are now stuck with” is the refusal of Democrats like Barney Frank to recognize the need for reform and oversite at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac…who together owned or guaranteed one-half of the trillion dollar U.S. mortgage market. John McCain apparently recognized the problem as on may 25, 2006 he stated on the Senate floor, “I join as a co-spnsor to the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act fo 2005, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole”. President Bush, along with those in his administration, also warned of problems and the need for regulations and oversite at Fannie and Freddie…a total of SEVENTEEN TIMES since 2001. And, the legislation I mentioned that would have done just that was blocked by the Democrats and never made it out of committee…of course Cris Dodd (D), then the ranking member of the Banking Committee and now its chair, was in the middle of receiving preferential loan treatment from Countrywide Mortgage…one of the companies gaming the system in the credit crisis. Here’s what Mr. Frank, who at the time was the ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee, and now its chair had to say about Fannie and Freddie in 2003, “The more people, in my judgement, exaggerate a threat of safety and soundness (at Fannie and Freddie), the more people conjure up the possibility of serious financial losses to the Treasury, which I do not see. And even if there were a problem, the Federal Government doesn’t bail them out. But the more pressure there is, then the less I think we see in affordable housing”. THAT’S BRILLIANT BARNEY!!! I especially like the part that people were just exaggerating and conjuring up problems that don’t exist. what gets me is that these people have the GALL to even show their faces!! The “funny” thing is the trail of corruption leads straight to Barack Obama…who happens to be, by far, the top recipient of “donations” from Fannie and Freddie since he has been in Congress. Now, who is it that’s to blame???

It’s great to have an email Autoresponder like 1shopping cart, getresponce, icontact, or Aweber automating my email sending, but I need one that will tell me when to send a piece of paper in the mail on a set schedule as well. Is there anything like this? Can you help me, it really would make my life easier, at the moment I’m trying to do it with a card file, and failing BADLY! Any ideas greatly appreciated.

How long should I wait to follow up with a company after sending my resume?

I submitted my resume to the HR department of the company last week and wanted to know if it was too early to follow up. This is my dream position and I want them to know how interested I am.

My concern is that the HR department is not going to be doing the hiring, so should I contact them or try to find out who the hiring manager is? I don’t want to seem annoying.
