Hi, I am a Latin America lawyer and two weeks ago I had a phone job interview with the HR Director for a position as a legal assistant for the company’s clients in Latin America. We talked about my professional experience, salary, benefits and relocation expectations. Well, my professional experience was praised by the interviewer, my salary expectation was market rate, the benefits were fixed the same for every employer, but because I am at the moment based in South America I was asked about my relocation expectations and I proposed the documentation necessary to take the work permit visa and some help to search an apartment. Next day I sent a thank you email but still had no answer. The position is still avaiable at the company’s site. The question is how should I follow up this job because no deadline was fixed at the interview.

How soon after that?

I want to freelance for newspapers. I sent an email a few weeks ago to an editor of a local daily — not to ask for a job — but to show my interest in writing for the publication. I didn’t follow-up due to my own fears of rejection. One of my friends who works for a daily said that editors actually don’t mind being contacted by prospective freelance writers. So I guess there’s no reason for me to assume I’m rejected if I haven’t at least communicated w/them to confirm this. Could somebody shed some light on contacting editors to show my interest w/o bugging them? How should I approach editors in terms of my communication with them either via e-mail or over the phone? Getting thru to an editor is a mystery to me. Is it all about who you know? Like I have to have some connection to get **in** the company — even as a freelancer? The advice I receive probably would apply to magazine editors, too.

I had an extremely successful interview for a position and the company rushed for a 2nd interview with the final decision maker which I thought also went pretty well. The 2nd interview lasted over 2 hours. The company is a brand new company, the office has not even opened yet but the position I am applying for is usually hired 4-6 months prior to opening. They initially said they wanted the position filled by the 1st week of March. I have followed up with them numerous times and they continue to tell me the position has not been filled yet and they have not made a decision. I’ve been given numerous reasons as to why it has not been filled (construction issues, budget issues, etc). Yet they have not yet said they still want me. I would move on from this position as I feel the companies follow up reflects their professionalism but I REALLY want this position. How long & how often should I continue to follow up?
